My Very First Light!

This may look like an ordinary living room,
but with a little imagination and some ghetto rigged
equipment it transforms into a studio!

Above is a picture of my light.
Yes it's a work light (the kind they use on construction sites etc.)
I'm not ready for the investment of a nice set of studio lights,
so this will have to do for now.

In order to soften the light, I bought some white shiny fabric.
I then used some more white fabric to create a backdrop.

This is the result of my first set up.
Nate was kind enough to let me drag him out of bed
and begrudgingly model for me (thanks babe).
Here we have a little Rembrandt lighting with
a low ratio due to the window light and the
reflection off my white walls.

This was my next set up.
I had Nate sit on a chair and I put up a navy curtain.

The ratio is a little higher due to the navy absorbing
some light, and it's an open loop lighting pattern.

Here's an experimental one. I think it turned out cool!

Well, that's all the action my makeshift studio has seen thus far.
Tonight I'm inviting Ethan and Diedre over for some more trial and error.
Then I'm photographing a family this Saturday, so hopefully I'll come
out with some fun stuff!

  2. dude I have though of the same thing for a studio. My dad has a work light and he mentioned that it would probably work and it looks like it does. Brilliant Kate! I have been using natural light through windows alot lately too and it works great too!
